While still in Germany, Hannah Luft beats her husband in her own backyard. A neighbor witnesses, and Hannah is arrested. She faces a 10-year sentence. But, despite testimony from her neighbor and her husband's prying mother, she manages to be acquitted. Then she learns of a community in the U.S. where women rule entirely and husbands may be mistreated without interference from authorities. When Hannah and husband Alfred arrive in Imperia, Mayor Lola Dean shows them around the unusual gated community and introduces them to some of the residents. Due to her persecution in Germany, Hannah finds she is awarded immediate acceptance into Imperia. Hannah soon finds this is heaven on Earth for her. Her husband, Alfred, finds the opposite.

Chairwoman and Mayor Lola Dean invited the couple into her opulent office. Tall French doors dominated the room, the windows overlooking a lush lawn, once part of a golf course. She waved her arm, inviting her visitors to sit.

"Please, Madam Hannah, of course this chair is for you. And Herr Alfred you may use the stool." Mayor Dean stepped behind her large mahogany desk. "I have gone over your file and application, and it seems to be in order, but still there is a brief formality we must conduct. Just a few questions."
